The Real Problem Isn't the Boomtown. It's What's Already Breaking.

We’ve talked about boom towns, data center factory build-outs, and power plants, as well as the waves of new business they’re bringing. That part's real. But here's the truth: this affects distributors, from trucking to HVAC, in driving orders. And you don't need a boomtown to feel this pain. It's already here.

1. Your Sales and Counter Reps are quitting faster than you can replace them

If conversations are on a personal phone, every time a rep walks out the door, that relationship goes with them. These are details you can't get back fast: past conversations, customer history, the little things that make someone feel known instead of just processed.

The next person who calls that customer starts from zero, and that customer can tell.

2. You Can’t Find Good People to Hire.

The labor market isn't handing you a stack of experienced distribution reps. You're pulling from a smaller pool, competing with every other trade and industry doing the same thing. Waiting for the "right" candidate means orders sit unanswered and customers sit on hold.

3. Training takes months, not days

A new rep doesn't just need to learn where the bathroom is. They need to learn your systems, your product catalog, your pricing rules, and every customer's quirks, all before they can competently take a call. Months go by. In that window, mistakes happen. Customers notice.

4. New reps are learning three things at once: system, customer, product

This is the part that quietly kills momentum. A new hire isn't ramping on one skill. They're trying to master your internal tools, understand what the customer actually needs, and know your product catalog at the same time. No wonder it takes so long. No wonder mistakes slip through.

5. Your best rep is an exception, not the standard

Every distributor has that one rep. Knows every customer. Remembers every order history. Never drops the ball. Customers ask for them by name. But that rep can only take so many calls in a day. If your whole business depends on cloning that one person, you don't have a system; you have a bottleneck with a name on it.

The part that should worry you about Boom town.

The real problem isn't Boom Town. Most local teams aren't staffed for it. None of this needs a boom town to hurt you. Right now — today — a customer is calling in, getting a rep who doesn't know their order history, waiting longer than they should, and quietly deciding whether to call a competitor next time.

Margin is already tight. Tariffs are already unpredictable. You're already trying to forecast further out with a team that's still learning the basics.

Now imagine that same weak point under boomtown pressure. More orders. More new customers. Less patience for mistakes. The cracks that are small today become the reason you lose business tomorrow.

The boom is the bait. This is the hook.

You don't have to wait for a factory to break ground near you to feel the cost of turnover, slow ramp times, and inconsistent service. You're paying that cost right now, every day, in small amounts you might not even be tracking.

The real question isn't "are we ready for a boom." It's "why are we still losing ground when there isn't one."
