Major infrastructure projects are underway across the country. Aging water systems and rising power demand are driving new builds for reservoirs, dams, water treatment plants, and power generation facilities. These aren't small upgrades. Many communities are working with pipes, treatment plants, and grids that were built decades ago and are struggling to keep up with population growth, drought conditions, and heavier demand on the electrical grid.

What Are Water Systems, and Why Are They Being Rebuilt?

A water system covers everything that gets water from a natural source to a faucet and everything that happens to it after. That includes reservoirs and dams that store and control water supply, treatment plants that clean and filter it, pipelines that move it, and wastewater systems that process it once it's used.

Most of this infrastructure in the U.S. was built 50 to 100 years ago. Pipes corrode, treatment plants age out of capacity, and dams built for a much smaller population are now under pressure they were never designed for. Add in drought conditions across the West and Southwest, and the result is a growing list of regions that need new reservoirs, upgraded treatment facilities, or entirely new water storage systems just to keep up with demand.

It's not only about drinking water, either. Water systems support agriculture, manufacturing, and increasingly, the power grid and data infrastructure that keep everything else running.

Why Power Plants Are Being Built Right Now

Power generation is facing its own version of this problem. The electrical grid is under more strain than it's been in decades, driven by electrification, EV adoption, manufacturing growth, and the explosion of data centers needed to run AI. Utilities across the country are building new natural gas plants, nuclear facilities, and renewable generation to keep pace, and in many cases, upgrading transmission infrastructure that hasn't been touched in generations.

These builds take years of planning and construction, and they're happening in tandem with the water infrastructure projects, since power plants need reliable water access for cooling, and growing regions need both water and power capacity to support new development.

How Water Systems and Power Plants Connect to Data Centers

Data centers are one of the biggest reasons both water and power infrastructure are under pressure right now. A single large data center can use as much electricity as tens of thousands of homes, and many use significant amounts of water for cooling systems that keep servers from overheating.

That means every new data center campus effectively creates demand for more power generation and, in some regions, more water infrastructure to support it. Utilities and municipalities are having to plan power plants, substations, and water systems around the reality that data centers are now some of the largest consumers of both resources in the areas where they're built. It's part of why so many of these projects- water, power, and data infrastructure- are showing up in the same regions at the same time.

Water Systems and Power Plants Take a Massive Workforce

Building reservoirs, dams, treatment plants, and power facilities takes engineers, heavy equipment operators, electricians, construction specialists, and project managers. This means hundreds of workers, for months or even years at a time, depending on the scale of the project.

Regions across the West, Southeast, and parts of Appalachia are seeing the most activity right now, as drought-prone areas invest in water storage and fast-growing regions race to add power capacity to support both population growth and the data centers driving so much of today's demand.

Water System and Power Plant Ripple Effect 

Water systems, power plants, and data centers need more than a robust job site. Workers need to eat, relax, and spend money too. As crews settle into a region for months or years, local restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues see a surge in business. New spots open. Existing ones expand hours and menus to keep up.

That growth creates its own demand — more delivery trucks, more equipment moving people and supplies, more wear and tear on the vehicles and machines keeping the region running.

What This Means for Local Suppliers

All these workers, and the businesses growing up around them, need parts and equipment to keep things moving.

  • Truck parts distributors: heavy, sustained demand, as construction fleets haul crews, materials, and supplies over rugged terrain for years at a stretch
  • Heavy equipment dealers: steady rental and repair demand, as excavators, cranes, dozers, and generators run nonstop through every phase of the build

For local distributors, this isn't a one-time bump. These projects run for years, and the trucks and equipment supporting them need constant upkeep. That means more orders, consistent buyers, and a chance to become the go-to supplier for the entire region... not just one delivery.

This means that the distributors that show up fast, stock the right parts, and stay easy to reach will win the most repeat work as these projects roll through their area.
